This review refers to the Kindle version of this book. The first thing one notices when reading this book is that it is full of typos. Unfortunately, most of the early Sharon McCone books that have recently been released as Kindle editions suffer from not having been properly scanned, formatted or edited, but this is one of the worst. I'm not marking it down because it's not fair to the author, but if the author or publishers read reviews, they need to know that a long time McCone fan will ignore them in order to reread a favorite author, but folks new to the series might think it's just another one of those amateur wannabe writer's who doesn't realize that it's a "Do not disturb SIGN" not a "do not disturb SING" or that most narrow streets are not lined with "cards"! I bookmarked 32 such errors, and I'm sure I missed quite a few.

That being said, this is still one of my favorites of Marcia Muller's early books. It's obvious that the book is from a time when the technology we've all come to rely on has not been perfected yet. so plugged in all the time. She still has to look for a pay phone and still types reports on a Selectric typewriter. But the content still captures the essence of a changing neighborhood and the culture clash as refugees from a war try to integrate into society.

This is also the book where we start to get more details about the folks who work at the All Souls Co-op and we start to see more facets of her life. I will definitely keep reading my way through the series, but I do hope eventually somebody fixes the typos and offers those of us who got the wonky editions a free upgrade!

There Nothing to Be Afraid Of Marcia Muller 9780445409019 Books Reviews

The Tenderloin is a very unique section of The City (I live in the Bay Area and that is what we call San
Francisco). Great story with real-life characters. This mystery has a twist ending --- hey, I didn't see
it coming. Muller always delivers a great story.
The novel is a typical Sharon McCone page-turner with heart. The presentation is terrible. Typos, or something, on almost every page.
The Sharon McCone series by Marcia Muller is wonderful. Sharon is a character like we all wish we were, and the stories are very well written and easy to read. Try to start from the first of the series so you can follow Sharon's life as it unfolds. Have read them all and now must wait til each new one comes out - ENJOY!
San Francisco, after Vietnam, before cell phones, the Tenderloin in full color, a book that made me go back and make sure that the publication date was indeed 2011. Good local color read, well written, not a complex or deep book, but capturing all the elements accurately from the quirky porn movie house operator, to the confused young refugees. Kept me turning the pages and wanting to read more from the author.
I love this series of books. This title if not as good as the later editions, but still entertaining.

I was, however, very disappointed in the version. I found a mistake on at least every 4th page. It is apparent that it was run through spell-check and not proofed for having ended up with the correct word. In many places, I had to go back several times to figure out what they were trying to say. Very sloppy and unprofessional!
Good addition to the Sharon McCone series. These books always seem so real to me. The characters are flawed, react naturally to events around them, and remain appealing to the reader. There is often a social message imbedded in the story and this is the case in "There's Nothing to Be Afraid of." The messages do not take away from the action of the story. I am an avid fan of Marcia Muller's writing and will continue to buy her books.
I am a Sharon McCone fan so was pleased to find one I had not read. This takes place early in the series which was interesting to discover some of the backstory of the detective. The story held my interest all the way to the surprising and satisfying ending.
But an enormous shame on the editors who allowed misspellings, typos, poor grammar to the point that the reader has to go back and retread a sentence to make sense of it. It became a game (somewhat more interesting than the story) to find the next mistake.
